What is a tontine?

A tontine is a system of organization among trusted people — friends, colleagues, family, or members of the same community — that allows collective planning of financial projects through mutual commitment. It is based on solidarity, trust, and organization among members, without involvement from any external institution.
This mutual aid model, practiced in many parts of the world (Africa, Asia, Latin America…), exists in various formats.

Rotary tontine

In this format, members contribute at regular intervals. At each cycle, one member receives the collective fund, according to an order defined or drawn by the members themselves.
This mechanism allows everyone to benefit, in turn, from a substantial amount to carry out a personal or family project.

Accumulation tontine

Here, members’ contributions are pooled collectively. Once the accumulated amount is sufficient, the members decide together how to use the funds, often in the form of an advance or loan between members, with conditions agreed upon in advance.
Decisions are made collectively, and no transfers are made by a third party: everything relies on internal and mutual management among the participants.
